INTERFAITH PANEL - Thursday, May 15, 2008

An important public discussion will be held on Thursday, May 15, from 7pm -9pm at the 1912 Center in Moscow. It is called: “Promoting Peace and Harmony on the Palouse/ Spiritual Approaches from Interfaith Perspectives.” Panelists include: Sayed Daoud, Pullman Islamic Center; Lawrence Fox, Jewish Community of the Palouse; Nicholas Gier, Unitarian Church; Walter Hesford, Emanuel Lutheran Church; Ryder Stevens, Christian Science Lecturer; Chris Vaughn, Baha’i Community; Kayle Rice, Unitarian Church; and Fr. Bill Taylor, St. Augustine Center. Questions/comments will be accepted from the floor. Refreshments will be served.

JCP Dues Payments needed for this year 2007-2008

JCP Dues run from September to September. If you have not paid dues for September 2007 through August 2008, then please do so immediately. Our dues are not expensive. The suggested dues are: for a family $30-$60; for an individual $20-$30; and no charge for students. If you are not able to pay the suggested dues, than any amount will be appreciated. Make your check payable to "Jewish Community of the Palouse" and please mail it to: Jewish Community of the Palouse c/o The K-House, 720 NE Thatuna St., Pullman, WA 99163. There is no charge to simply receive our email notices.

We need to collect our dues to cover our overhead and other expenses. We pay for our office and other uses at the K-House in Pullman. That alone is a considerable expense. In addition, we rent space for High Holy Day Services, the Chanukah Party, and other events. We purchase books and supplies for our Friday Night Services and other religious services and celebrations. We underwrite other educational activities, social occasions, film events, speakers, and other events. We have kept our expenses down. We have also received private grants to underwrite our activities. But we cannot continue without the monetary support of members as well as their willingness to volunteer to plan and conduct our activities.

JCP General Meeting changed to Friday, May 16, before Services

The Annual JCP General Meeting has been changed. Instead of Sunday, May 18^th, it will be held on Friday, May 16^th before Services. The potluck will begin at 6:30 PM. The meeting will begin a few minutes later and run while we eat. The meeting might take only about 15 minutes. Sunset that night is around 7:45 PM. There should be no problem for persons who want to attend the General Meeting, but still leave to get home before sunset. The General Meeting agenda generally involves a treasurer’s report, a president’s report, and elections. No one has informed me that they would like to stand for election. But please volunteer to be elected if you are so inclined.

JCP Religious Education Program for 2008-2009

Susan Rydeen has volunteered to be in charge of the children’s Religious Education program for the Academic Year 2008-2009. It meets on Sunday mornings. If you are interested in the program, please contact her at susanferman@yahoo.com. Here is her message to all of us: “I am starting to work on coordinating Religious Education for next year. We would like to get an idea of how many kids we have interested in RE for next semester (fall), and what their ages are. I know we have a lot of members with younger children, so if there is interest, we will set something up that is age-appropriate for the little one, too. We also would like to hear from anyone interested in having more formal Hebrew School lessons for the older kids, say ages six and up. If there is enough interest, we will try to set something up -- perhaps after school one day a week. Please let me know if you are interested ASAP, so that we have some lead time to plan for each age group.”

May 16-18 HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE FILM PRESENTATION

“The Counterfeiters,” a fictionalized account of the true story of the Nazi attempts to use Jewish prisoners in Sachsenhausen to produce counterfeit Allied currency, won this year’s OSCAR for Best Foreign Film. It will be shown at the Kenworthy Performing Arts Centre in downtown Moscow at the following days and times: Friday-Saturday, May 16-17, at 5:40 and 8:00 PM, and Sunday, May 18, at 4:40 and 7:00 PM.

This is a second reminder about the JCP PURIM PARTY at the K-House on Thursday, March 20, 2008, between 5:30 PM and 7:00 PM. The party will be oriented toward children, but adults and child-like adults are welcome. Everyone is encouraged to come in COSTUME, if you wish. It will be a potluck with just vegetarian or dairy snacks (no meat or seafood). For more information about the food, see the first notice published below (under the date of February 27).

PASSOVER - First Seder is Saturday Night, April 19, 2008

The first Seder of Passover will be on Saturday night, April 19, 2008.
In the past, the JCP has tried to organize a Community Seder event on the second night or some other night. This year, we are looking for a volunteer who will take charge of planning and organizing a JCP Community Seder. If you are interested, please contact schreck2020@msn.com.
JCP members looking to purchase stuff for Passover might want to check out Bed, Bath, and Beyond in Moscow's Palouse Empire Mall. Apparently they have such goodies as seder plates, baby bibs, and ten plagues masks and puppets, baby bibs.

April 4th to 6th, 2008 -- Jewish Playwright at Univ of Idaho

Jessica Goldberg, whose plays have been performed in NY, LA and Berlin, will be welcomed to the University of Idaho Department of Theatre's New Works Festival. Her play, WARD 57, will be performed on Friday, April 4 @ 7:30 PM, Saturday, April 5 @ 7:30 PM, and Sunday, April 6 @ 2:00 PM. WARD 57 was inspired by Ms. Goldberg's experiences interviewing families of American soldiers at war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Hollywood challenges military policy when a screenwriter asks for interviews with injured veterans for a new movie about their extraordinary sacrifice. A JCP PURIM PARTY is scheduled for March 20th

Several JCP members have organized a JCP PURIM PARTY at the K-House on Thursday Evening, March 20, 2008, between 5:30 PM and 7:00 PM. The party will be particularly oriented toward children, but adults and child-like adults are welcome. Everyone is encouraged to come in COSTUME, if you wish.

This will be a potluck with just vegetarian or dairy snacks (no meat or seafood). Kosher certification of prepared foods is not required, but is appreciated. Here are some ideas:

Hummus

pasta salad

veggie sticks

sliced fruit

pita wedges

corn chips

bean dip (no lard)

salsa,

guacamole

English muffin pizzas (no meat)

fruit juice

hamantashen (if you want to bake)

Isaac Sander Berger, the son of Cynthia Piez and Ken Berger, long time members of the JCP, will be celebrating his Bar Mitzvah at Temple Beth Shalom in Spokane. He will be leading Friday Night Services at 7:30 PM on January 11, 2008. And he will be called to the Torah during Shabbat Morning Services, starting at 9:00 AM, on Saturday, January 12, 2008. A Kiddush luncheon will follow services on Saturday. Jan 2008 PBS Documentary on "Jewish Americans"

A new PBS 6 hour series called "The Jewish Americans" will be broadcast on KSPS (Spokane channel 7) for three weeks, starting Thursday, January 10, 2008. It follows 350 years of Jewish-American history and explores the experience of immigration and assimilation. In Pullman-Moscow, channel 12, it is scheduled to be shown on three Wednesdays, January 9th, 16th and 23rd. BUT YOU SHOULD CHECK YOUR LOCAL LISTINGS. The first episode covers the period from the 1700s, when the first Jews arrive in America, to the early 20th century, when more than two million Eastern European Jews, fleeing poverty and oppression, emigrate. Gravitating to the Lower East Side of Manhattan, they develop their own unique cultural institutions. The second episode covers the early 20th century, when Anti-Semitism is on the rise even as some Jews succeed in mainstream pursuits; in the 1920s, Jewish immigrants come to dominate Hollywood. The episode also outlines the Depression and the reaction to the destruction of European Jewry during WWII. At war’s end, American Jews suddenly find themselves the largest and most powerful Jewish community in the world. And the final episode covers the post-war period, when discrimination against Jews in daily life begins to abate and Jews enter professions such as medicine, law and banking in record numbers.

Dec 9 JCP Annual Chanukah Party in Moscow

The JCP Annual Chanukah Party will be on Sunday, December 9, 2007 -- between 2:30 PM and 5:30 PM -- at the St. Augustine Catholic Center, 628 S Deakin St., Moscow, Idaho -- next to the UI Bookstore parking lot and across the street from the University of Idaho Student Union Building.

It will be a potluck. The JCP will provide beverages, paper products, utensils, and LATKES. Please bring a dish to share with six other people. That night will be the Sixth Night of Chanukah. You can bring your family Chanukah Menorah and candles. We will have Klezmer music -- performed by Gefilte Trout -- and we will have dancing led by Mitchell Frey and Roberta Radavich.

We will need help setting up (including decorations) -- and help cleaning up. Please volunteer to help us; contact Larry Fox at fox@vetmed.wsu.edu or if you don't use email, you can contact Myron Schreck at 208-882-0971. Or you can just come early and/or plan to stay later.

Dec 8 Chanukah Class at Pullman Parks and Rec

Saturday, December 8, 2007, between 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM, there will be a class called "It's Hanukah Time" sponsored by Pullman Parks and Recreation. The instructor is Miriam Kent (long-time JCP member) -- who has asked the JCP to provide the following information:

"Come learn about the Jewish Holiday called the Festival of Lights. We'll spin dreidels, bake & decorate special cookies, share songs, games & stories. Create a Hanukah memento. Jewish and non-Jewish children welcome. Families invited at 2:30 to watch a little 'show' and eat warm cookies."

Register by Wednesday, Dec 5th. It will be at the Pioneer Center, 240 SE Dexter St., Pullman, WA 99163. Phone: 509-338-3227. It will cost $18 per child. It is open to children ages 2.5-7. Adult or older silbling required to stay with children under 4.

Tuesday night, November 20, 2007, from 5:30 PM to 6 PM, the Moscow Interfaith Association will hold its annual Thanksgiving Vigil at Friendship Square in Downtown Moscow (4th and Main Streets). Bring a candle to spill light into the dark and a grateful heart for the blessings in your lives.

Nov 9 Holocaust Presentation & Exhibit at WSU's Holland Library

On November 9th, 2007 -- at 3 pm -- there will be an Opening Reception, with an Opening Address by Dr. Wes Leid, WSU Honors College, for the Holocaust Exhibit at Holland Library. The exhibit is "Neighbors Who Disappeared," coordinated by the Jewish Museum in Prague and prepared by Czech youth who researched information about people who had disappeared from Czech towns during the Holocaust.
