JCP EVENTS BLOG - JEWISH COMMUNITY OF THE PALOUSE

An important public discussion will be held on Thursday, May 15, from 7pm -9pm at the 1912 Center in Moscow.  It is called:  “Promoting Peace and Harmony on the Palouse/ Spiritual Approaches from Interfaith Perspectives.”   Panelists include:  Sayed Daoud, Pullman Islamic Center; Lawrence Fox, Jewish Community of the Palouse; Nicholas Gier, Unitarian Church; Walter Hesford, Emanuel Lutheran Church; Ryder Stevens, Christian Science Lecturer; Chris Vaughn, Baha’i Community; Kayle Rice, Unitarian Church; and Fr. Bill Taylor, St. Augustine Center.  Questions/comments will be accepted from the floor.  Refreshments will be served.  

JCP Dues run from September to September.  If you have not paid dues for September 2007 through August 2008, then please do so immediately.  Our dues are not expensive.  The suggested dues are:  for a family $30-$60; for an individual $20-$30; and no charge for students.  If you are not able to pay the suggested dues, than any amount will be appreciated.  Make your check payable to "Jewish Community of the Palouse" and please mail it to: Jewish Community of the Palouse c/o The K-House, 720 NE Thatuna St., Pullman, WA 99163.  There is no charge to simply receive our email notices.

We need to collect our dues to cover our overhead and other expenses.  We pay for our office and other uses at the K-House in Pullman.  That alone is a considerable expense.  In addition, we rent space for High Holy Day Services, the Chanukah Party, and other events.  We purchase books and supplies for our Friday Night Services and other religious services and celebrations.  We underwrite other educational activities, social occasions, film events, speakers, and other events.  We have kept our expenses down.  We have also received private grants to underwrite our activities.  But we cannot continue without the monetary support of members as well as their willingness to volunteer to plan and conduct our activities.

The Annual JCP General Meeting has been changed.  Instead of Sunday, May 18^th, it will be held on Friday, May 16^th before Services.  The potluck will begin at 6:30 PM.   The meeting will begin a few minutes later and run while we eat.  The meeting might take only about 15 minutes.  Sunset that night is around 7:45 PM.  There should be no problem for persons who want to attend the General Meeting, but still leave to get home before sunset. The General Meeting agenda generally involves a treasurer’s report, a president’s report, and elections.  No one has informed me that they would like to stand for election.  But please volunteer to be elected if you are so inclined. 

     Jessica Goldberg, whose plays have been performed in NY, LA and Berlin, will be welcomed to the University of Idaho Department of Theatre's New Works Festival.  Her play, WARD 57, will be performed on Friday, April 4 @ 7:30 PM, Saturday, April 5 @ 7:30 PM, and Sunday, April 6 @ 2:00 PM.  All performances will be at the Kiva Theatre, in the UI College of Education Building.  For a map of the location see http://www.class.uidaho.edu/irt/current/current.html. 

     WARD 57 was inspired by Ms. Goldberg's experiences interviewing families of American soldiers at war in Iraq and Afghanistan.  "How do we honor sacrifices made by soldiers asked to fight in an unpopular war? When is the honor exposed as exploitation? These are more than theoretical questions at Walter Reed’s Ward 57. Hollywood challenges military policy when a screenwriter asks for interviews with injured veterans for a new movie about their extraordinary sacrifice.
